Dewatering study
For safe and permit-proof underground works
Dewatering study
A waterlogged excavation. Damage to neighbouring buildings. A permit delayed due to impact concerns.
Underground works often require a temporary lowering of the groundwater level. Yet dewatering extends beyond your site boundary. Without a robust study, risks increase, technically and legally.
That is why every project should start with a sound dewatering study.
What should a dewatering study clarify?
Before you begin, you want one thing: certainty.
- Is dewatering truly necessary?
- How far does its influence extend?
- Is there a risk of damage to neighbouring buildings?
- Will protected nature be affected?
- Could the intervention jeopardise your permit?
If these questions remain unanswered, the risk shifts to execution and planning.
What does this mean for your project?
Witteveen+Bos supports dewatering projects from initial assessment through to the permit application. We begin with a thorough hydrogeological appraisal of the subsoil and assess whether dewatering is genuinely required. We then develop a dewatering concept aligned with your programme, budget and construction method.
We calculate abstraction rates and radii of influence. For complex cases, we apply numerical groundwater models. Next, we assess all relevant effects: settlement risks, uplift hazards, impact on ecology, groundwater abstractions and existing contamination. Finally, we compile a legally robust dossier, including discharge advice and all required components for the environmental permit.
Why our approach makes the difference
Dewatering affects more than engineering. It touches ecology, soil conditions, regulations and construction practice. That is why hydrogeologists, ecologists, modellers and soil specialists collaborate within one integrated process.
You notice the difference in practice: fewer surprises during the permitting phase. Fewer revisions. Less discussion between authorities and contractors. And above all: greater control over programme and budget.
Certainty before you start
