The Flemish Government has developed an action plan of 100 million euros. Food, chemical, technological, social economy, and other companies will receive guidance and investment support to make their production processes less dependent on fossil fuels, thus becoming more climate-friendly and cost-effective. The "Economic Potential Study for Greening the Heat Demand of the Non-ETS Industry in Flanders" identified interesting technologies such as industrial heat pumps, electric boilers, solar thermal energy, biomass boilers, waste heat utilization, district heating networks, thermal storage, etc., and calculated the necessary investment support to make these technologies viable for businesses to implement.

Scope of sustainability studies

Thematic feasibility studies and business cases in the context of greening energy carriers in industry.

  1. Greening: the substitution of the use of fossil fuels by the use of green heat, green cold, green electricity, green hydrogen, blue hydrogen, or waste heat or cold. Electrification is also considered as greening;

  2. Improvement of energy efficiency: an increase in energy efficiency resulting from technological, behavioral, and/or economic changes;

  3. Green hydrogen: hydrogen produced from green electricity;

  4. Blue hydrogen: hydrogen produced from fossil fuels with carbon emissions capture and permanent storage or use of the captured carbon emissions.

Including studies on the following technologies (non-exhaustive):

  • (Industrial) heat pump
  • Electric boiler
  • Electrification of industrial processes
  • Solar thermal energy
  • Biogas boilers and biogas production
  • Utilization of waste heat
  • Heat networks between companies
  • Shallow and deep geothermal energy

Excluded are all mandatory energy studies that companies, agricultural and horticultural businesses, and government-owned companies are already required to conduct.
