Course Biological Water Treatment

Biological treatment systems are by far the most commonly used wastewater treatment technology. The nature of the processes, the strict effluent requirements and the constantly increasing focus on effluent reuse demand good process monitoring.

Learning outcomes

  • You understand and can interpret the composition of wastewater on the basis of specific characteristics: removal of organic substances, nitrogen and phosphorous
  • You are able to select potential treatment technologies on the basis of the wastewater’s composition
  • You are able to define a wastewater treatment scheme on the basis of the wastewater’s composition
  • You are able to assess the operation of the following biological treatment processes on the basis of process characteristics: anaerobic treatment plants, aerobic treatment plants, biological nitrogen removal
  • You are able to assess the operation of the physicochemical removal of phosphorous by evaluating metal salts on the basis of process characteristics
  • You are able to assess the opportunities for undertaking corrective actions in case of process disruptions
  • You are able to assess the various schemes for treating sewage sludge on the basis of technical and economic aspects
  • You are able to develop a cost estimate for a wastewater treatment system

Course contents

Wastewater composition

In this section we teach you how to correctly assess analytical wastewater data. The parameters covered include: organic contamination parameters (CSV, BZV, TOC), nitrogen, phosphorous, solid and dissolved particles in water (dry substances, ash, floating particles and more).

Current treatment technologies

The course provides an overview of the most current treatment technologies and their area of application. We show you how a comprehensive treatment scheme is developed on the basis of the wastewater’s composition.

Biological treatment technologies

In this section, the core of this training course, we deal with various biological treatment technologies:

  • Anaerobic treatment
  • Aerobic treatment
  • Biological nitrogen removal

In addition, we explain the physicochemical removal of phosphorous. This training course primarily uses a process-oriented approach. As a result, we put a lot of emphasis on control parameters and monitoring, as well as on managing disasters.

Sludge processing

We discuss the objectives of sludge processing and the various treatment technologies. In this respect we also cover the relationship between technology and cost reduction.

Wastewater treatment costs

In this section we explain the various cost factors associated with the treatment of wastewater. We provide examples that show how costs can be assessed and kept under control.

Training method

This practical 3-day training course provides all the tools needed to monitor and manage biological treatment processes. This is why this course targets people who are involved in this on a daily basis.

The course is presented by experienced instructors and also includes an opportunity to visit a wastewater treatment plant. Furthermore, we pay particular attention to practicing the acquired knowledge. For this reason, participants may also bring their own data to these practice sessions.

At the end of the course, participants will receive a training certificate (21 hours), which is valid as recurrent training for environmental coordinators (21 hours).
