Sufficient capacity despite grid congestion

WZN Zwolle

Weezenland Noord, a new underground parking garage next to Zwolle railway station, is located in an area where the grid operator does not expect to have expansion capacity available until 2035. Until then, there appeared to be insufficient capacity for both the basic facilities and the charging infrastructure. The municipality wanted to know how the parking garage could be opened despite this limitation.

Data-driven capacity analysis

Witteveen+Bos carried out a capacity analysis based on data from comparable parking garages. We determined the expected power profile and charging profile and studied alternative ways of operating the parking garage, including battery storage and smart charging.

Technical and spatial analysis

We analysed the technical feasibility, safety and spatial impact of the scenarios. This gave the municipality a detailed picture of the measures required to guarantee sufficient capacity, even during periods of grid congestion.

Resultaat

The Weezenlanden Noord (WZN) mobility hub is an important step towards minimising the use of cars in the centre of Zwolle. This location was chosen because of its proximity to the city centre (a max. 10-minute walk), its accessibility from the ring road and the ample space available for the hub.
