Weezenlanden-Noord Mobility Hub
Smart solution to ease grid congestion
Weezenlanden-Noord Mobility Hub
An underground mobility hub will be built in Weezenlanden-Noord, Zwolle, with space for 425 cars and electric charging facilities. The hub will be about a ten-minute walk from the city centre and will play a key role in ensuring good access to the historic inner-city area known as the Stadshart.
The mobility hub will be located in an area experiencing grid congestion. That issue limits the electricity grid capacity available there, however a parking garage with charging facilities obviously requires a considerable amount of electric power.
Study analysing energy usage and the charging requirement
Witteveen+Bos investigated how the mobility hub could operate within the available grid capacity. The predicted energy usage and charging profile were identified based on data relating to similar parking garages. Then various scenarios were examined to match the supply of electricity to demand as closely as possible.
This process included consultation with the municipality of Zwolle on aspects such as smart charging management and energy storage. Through smart charging, the charging capacity can be adjusted to coincide with the times when electricity is available. A battery can store energy when capacity is available and then use it at other times. This approach ensures that the available grid capacity is utilised as efficiently as possible.
The different scenarios were assessed in terms of their technical feasibility, safety and ease of spatial integration. Based on that assessment, work has been done to develop an energy system that matches the expected use of the mobility hub and the development in the charging requirement.
Prepared for growth in electric mobility
This means that the mobility hub can handle further growth in the use of electric vehicles, without being entirely dependent on an expansion of the grid capacity in the short term. The available capacity can be used flexibly through the combination of energy storage and smart charging management.
Construction of the mobility hub is expected to begin in 2027. Completion is scheduled for 2030.
The mobility hub contributes to keeping the city centre easily accessible and welcoming. By concentrating parking at the edge of the Stadshart, space is created elsewhere for housing, green spaces and public areas.
