Sustainable school parking lot nominated for Belgian Construction Award

Sustainable school parking lot nominated for Belgian Construction Award
New eco-friendly parking in Kapelle-op-den-Bos improves traffic flow and climate resilience
Near the primary school De Kiem in Kapelle-op-den-Bos, engineering firm Witteveen+Bos designed a new 45-space parking lot. Built in close collaboration with the municipality and contractor Dries De Waele, the project earned a nomination for the Belgian Construction Award – Climate Future Project.
Less traffic, more safety
The new parking area reduces congestion near the school and ensures safer traffic along Mechelseweg. At the same time, the neighbourhood became greener and more attractive, with the planting of 17 trees and 250 metres of hedge.
'Great to see our design and tender documents encouraged sustainable choices.'

Innovative and circular: from kerbs to water systems
The design team focused on sustainability in every step:
- recycled materials and fewer transports reduced environmental impact;
- kerbs made of polymer concrete, a low-carbon alternative to traditional concrete, were developed together with supplier Ebema, a Belgian first;
- permeable paving and integrated rainwater buffering via swales and gravel trenches support a climate-resilient landscape.
