New cycle bridge in Opwijk improves safety and nature along Leirekensroute
Safer and greener rides on the Leirekensroute
Cycling between Aalst and Londerzeel? Then you've probably used the Leirekensroute — a scenic path for walkers and cyclists built on an old railway track. It’s peaceful and green, but not always safe: the route crosses several busy roads.
One of those points, the Steenweg op Dendermonde (N47), will soon get a major upgrade: a brand-new cycle bridge. The design was recently presented to the local community in Opwijk.
Smart solution for a tricky slope
The Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic asked engineering firm Witteveen+Bos to design the new bridge. It follows the same route as the old crossing, but the slope was a major design challenge.
- West of the N47, a straight slope with a 4 % incline was possible;
- East of the road, the difference in height was too great, and space too limited.
The answer? An oval spiral slope with a straight section in between. One curve has a tighter radius to help slow down cyclists. There are also rest points built into the slope — all to boost safety and comfort.
Open views and a natural touch
The bridge is not just functional. Its design also enhances the environment:
- a slim bridge deck and slender pillars reduce visual impact;
- open views maintain the connection with the green surroundings;
- new greenery and embankments reinforce the natural character;
- the oval ramp blends into the park, helping with rainwater infiltration.
The result? A bridge that offers ecological and social value. It keeps cyclists safe, while adding comfort, beauty and climate resilience to the area.
