Kapellenblok Herentals

Future-proof neighbourhood blending nature, heritage and community

Kapellenblok Herentals

A new district, shaped by residents

Kapellenblok is a new residential development in Herentals, Belgium. Commissioned by the City of Herentals, local parish Onze-Lieve-Vrouw and regional development agency IOK, the project aims to create an affordable, sustainable neighbourhood. Witteveen+Bos was brought in to develop the masterplan – together with the local community.

New life for historic grounds

The project site has a special history. In the 1970s, Maria Verstappen donated her estate – including a castle and surrounding land – to the parish. Her only wish? A new chapel. That wish is now coming true through the construction of a contemplative space designed via an international architecture competition.

But the land offers more potential. The three partners saw an opportunity to turn it into an inspiring example of sustainable, inclusive living in the Kempen region.

A neighbourhood rooted in the landscape

Witteveen+Bos is responsible for the subdivision masterplan and permit application, with a focus on the design of public spaces. Think green streets, smart water buffers, and welcoming meeting places. We also coordinate construction and prepare the as-built file – in close collaboration with Van Opstal, who drafts the technical specs and organises the tendering process.

Designed with and for residents

The design process involves the local community through participatory workshops. Their input helps shape a district that truly fits its surroundings – with a variety of housing types and a strong connection to the existing environment.

The site lies between the Herentals ridge and the Kleine Nete valley. Dune landscapes are extended into the site, while wetlands are created in the south to tackle waterlogging and seepage. A climate-resilient neighbourhood that feels like home.
