Greening scan at Wit-Gele Kruis Limburg
For their new headquarters, Wit-Gele Kruis Limburg was determined to opt for a sustainable heating and cooling system. But which technology would be most suitable? And how could the additional investment be financed? 'The greening scan by Witteveen+Bos gave us the right insights and the confidence we needed,' says Stef Truyers, project coordinator at Wit-Gele Kruis Limburg.
From idea to feasible plan
In the coming years, a 1980s building on the Prins Bisschopsingel in Hasselt will be thoroughly renovated into a sustainable, green, and accessible headquarters. Choosing the right future-proof building technologies, however, required an in-depth study.
An ATES system (Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage) looked highly promising: energy-efficient, sustainable, and future-oriented. But the higher upfront cost and longer payback period made the decision less straightforward. That’s why the organisation explored the VLAIO GREEN subsidy, for which a greening scan is an important step.
After a short market exploration, Witteveen+Bos emerged as the right partner. With their broad expertise, relevant references, and clear communication, they immediately inspired confidence.
The outcome
The scan resulted in a feasibility study built on three pillars:
- a technical analysis,
- a comparison of pros and cons,
- and a detailed business case.
This provided a clear picture of both investment and operating costs over the full life cycle of an ATES system compared with an air-to-water heat pump. The conclusion was unambiguous: the ATES system scores better on energy efficiency, lower energy costs, and added features such as free cooling in summer.
Stef Truyers: 'The report not only gave us the perfect foundation for our GREEN subsidy application to VLAIO, but also challenged our construction consortium to further refine their design.' Meanwhile, the subsidy application has been approved, and in 2027 Wit-Gele Kruis Limburg will move into its new headquarters.
A clear recommendation
Stef Truyers: 'A greening scan adds real value. VLAIO covers 85 % of the costs, so your organisation only pays a fraction. And the final report goes far beyond a subsidy file: it provides an objective comparison of options, a solid financial and technical framework, and a strong basis for making better internal decisions. For us, it was a valuable compass on the road to a sustainable, future-ready building.'
