'Beer is a gift of nature. That’s why we prefer to brew in harmony with nature. We reduce and green our energy use, cut emissions, recycle water, promote regenerative farming, and close the loop on packaging and waste. In short: we give back what we take. The greening scan by Witteveen+Bos perfectly supported that vision,' says Peter Willaert, Sustainability Director at Duvel Moortgat.
Ambition in black and white
Every year, Duvel Moortgat sharpens its sustainability goals in a report. Among the key targets: reducing CO₂ emissions by 60 % by 2030. An ambitious plan. The greening scan by Witteveen+Bos helped to map this out in detail.
From data to action
The Witteveen+Bos team dug deep into the brewery’s energy data. Based on their analysis, they developed a roadmap and phased action plan: from waste heat recovery and heat pumps to smarter biogas use and heat buffering. Each measure was assessed technically and economically, then translated into a feasible implementation plan.
Peter Willaert: 'The scan gave us not only valuable insights, but also a concrete strategy—with a phased plan that is realistic and achievable.'
From plan to practice
Subsidy applications are already underway. Once approved, the first sustainability measures will be rolled out.
A strong recommendation
Peter Willaert: 'We highly recommend a greening scan. It gives you a sharp view of your energy use and concrete ways to cut it. That speeds up your transition to renewable energy, use of (free) waste heat, and lowers consumption. In times of high energy costs, that can mean substantial savings. And with VLAIO covering 85 % of the costs, it’s basically a win-win. For your company and for the planet.'
