Together with four strategic partners, the consultancy and engineering firms Witteveen+Bos and Arcadis have again been selected to provide engineering services as fixed partners on the Zuidasdok programme. Zuidasdok is renovating the Amsterdam Zuid station and widening the A10 Zuid motorway and diverting it underground. The two firms have been collaborating since 2013 with strategic partners Arup, Team V Architecture, ZJA and SBE in the Ingenieursbureau Zuidasdok (IBZ) partnership. The new agreement guarantees the organisations’ involvement for the remainder of the programme’s duration up until 2036.

Zuidasdok is a joint programme carried out by the Dutch government, the Province of Noord-Holland, the Vervoerregio Amsterdam organisation and the City of Amsterdam. The single organisation responsible for works execution is a collaboration between Rijkswaterstaat, ProRail and the City of Amsterdam. As the current agreement between Zuidasdok and IBZ for engineering services expires on 1 July 2025, a new European tender process was necessary. On Thursday 19 September, the new framework agreement was signed by Leonie Koops (business line manager Infrastructure and Mobility at Witteveen+Bos), Patricia Zorko (Rijkswaterstaat) and Boris Schlangen (Arcadis).

Zuidasdok will improve the accessibility of Amsterdam and the northern Randstad by both road and rail. The engineering services agreement applies to all projects as well as cross-project matters, such as knowledge and skills in the fields of building engineering, architecture, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, installation technology, permits, the environment, and rail infrastructure. This will be necessary considering the programme includes the renovation of Amsterdam Zuid and the diversion underground of the A10 Zuid for about a kilometre, separating through traffic from local traffic.

Hans Ruijter from Zuidasdok: ‘During the tender process, IBZ proved to be the convincing winner with the best price-quality ratio. Decisive factors included the proposed manner of performing various required functions, the way in which Zuidasdok will be provided with expertise in all relevant knowledge and application areas, and the assurance of quality advice. We are extremely pleased with IBZ’s submission.’

Leonie Koops for Witteveen+Bos: ‘Working on Zuidasdok is every engineer’s dream. The good news that we’re able to continue our involvement until the end of the programme was met with joy. We’re pleased to be able to exploit the expertise we have in-house for this difficult spatial and technical assignment. Credit should go to the programme for daring to contract engineering services for the programme’s full duration. That’s very unusual. It gives us the chance to train new talents under the supervision of experienced experts. We have every confidence that continuing our collaboration with the client’s programme team and the contractor groups will be a success.’

Tanya Sancisi from Arcadis: ‘Having to work while ensuring the road and station remain accessible makes this assignment extra complex. Our engineers and those of our partners, however, find precisely this aspect to be the interesting challenge. We’re happy to be continuing the good collaboration with the client and the other parties chosen in order to contribute to a safe and accessible Amsterdam region.’
