When designing a structure or system, determining which choices are the most sustainable and circular is a complex process. Materials, quantities and future reuse all need to be considered at an early stage. Thanks to leaps in innovation and research, we now have hundreds of different materials at our disposal, each with their own characteristics – from lifespan to potential for recycling. To help navigate this plethora of options, Witteveen+Bos has developed the +Circular Design Tool. Intended for the construction and installation industries, it can be used to compare the most sustainable and circular options quickly and easily.

The +Circular Design Tool assesses the design of a structure or system for sustainability and circularity, visualising the results in a material flow analysis. A dashboard of indicators shows how a design performs in terms of (raw) materials use, circularity, and environmental impact (CO2 and ECI). The insights offered enable easy comparison of the circularity and sustainability of designs, allowing users to achieve maximum possible results in their design processes. The data produced also helps underpin circularity policy choices.

The +Circular Design Tool provides insight into the circularity and sustainability aspects of materials and construction methods at an early stage in the design process. This helps in making balanced design choices. Witteveen+Bos helps clients collect the right information and design specifications, exploiting its access to the latest data and knowledge on (raw) materials. It is our mission to help clients optimise and accelerate the transition towards a circular economy.
