We see it as our mission to inspire the engineers of the future in their quest to build a better world. This fall, we will therefore be presenting the Thesis Prize for the fifth time, in which two students (from universities of applied sciences and research universities) can win € 3,000.-- by submitting their thesis. Each edition focuses on one of Witteveen+Bos’s seven sustainable design principles. The award is open to all students at universities and universities of applied sciences. Through this award, Witteveen+Bos aims to encourage the next generation of consultants and engineers to design sustainably. This year’s theme is: Participatory Design.

What is Participatory Design?

Participatory design is about designing together with the community, rather than for the community. By actively involving stakeholders in the process, solutions emerge that better align with the wishes, concerns, and interests of users and local residents. At the same time, this increases support for and the quality of the final design.

In participatory design, content and process are explicitly linked. Ideas and insights from the community are actively incorporated into the design, for example through conversations, meetings, and online participation platforms. In this way, we create added value for both the design and the participation process itself.

Submit your thesis now!

Theses can be submitted through the submission form until September 15, 2026. Submissions will be evaluated by a professional jury consisting of experts from Witteveen+Bos and faculty members from tertiary education and academic institutions.

The award ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 12, at our Utrecht office.
