Sustainable mobility for new Groningen housing district

Witteveen+Bos will study how the new Groningen Suikerzijde Station can best be integrated into the existing infrastructure. We recently won the contract for this, together with the partners in the Team RailXpert collaboration. This assignment for ProRail covers a four-year period and focuses on the integration of the new station into the existing Leeuwarden-Groningen railway line.
The city of Groningen will soon begin construction of the first of about 5,000 homes in the new De Suikerzijde residential district, located on the site of the former sugar factory between the city and Hoogkerk. The new residential area is geared toward sustainable mobility, with a focus on bicycle facilities and public transport. The car is ‘a guest’ in De Suikerzijde and will hardly be seen on the streets. So the railway station, ‘Station Groningen Suikerzijde’, is destined to play an important role in the area's accessibility.
The study of all the options for Suikerzijde station focuses on the one hand on functional incorporation from a spatial planning perspective, including an underpass for cyclists, fast bus connections (HOV) and cars. On the other hand, we are investigating the practical ins and outs of incorporating a station in the timetable. The infrastructural modifications needed to make carrier apportionment possible are also being investigated. During the process, consideration is being given to future developments such as the Lelylijn and the European Rail Traffic Management System.
