To encourage greater use of bicycles, safe and comfortable cycling routes are indispensable. The municipality of ’s-Hertogenbosch, together with its partners, is therefore realising an express cycling route, connecting Zaltbommel NS station and ’s-Hertogenbosch Central Station. Part of this express cycling route, between Ertveldweg and the Dieze river, includes a bicycle viaduct over Zandzuigerstraat. Together with wUrck, Witteveen+Bos was awarded the design assignment in July 2023 to design an integrated bicycle viaduct.

The municipality’s invitation to tender concerned the design of the bicycle viaduct and the dimensioning and preparation of this section of the route. The assignment includes the project phases from design development to a works contract, including research and corresponding engagement and stakeholder management. The project has been made jointly possible by a subsidy from the province of North Brabant.

wUrck and Witteveen+Bos share a comprehensive approach to design tasks, bringing together spatial designers, landscape architects, ecologists, engineers and contract experts. Our complementary collaboration in the tender phase led to securing this contract: the municipality of ’s-Hertogenbosch appreciated our vision for the assignment, as it combined the dynamic character of the location, the historical context and environment of Zandzuigerstraat with an efficient, sustainable bridge. This will be carefully integrated into the landscape, with room for biodiversity and nature-inclusive design.

Our concept includes gentle access and exit slopes, which will result in greater cycling comfort and less material needed during its construction. Making smart decisions in the types of material used, the bridge will be constructed efficiently with the most sustainable components possible and with elements that can be dismantled. This will ensure a swift construction phase with as little disruption to the environment as possible and contribute to the circularity of the project.

In the connecting slopes and in the substructure of the viaduct, we have space to implement ecological features, such as habitats for small animals. As such, the project will also strengthen urban biodiversity.
