The story of Kaat Verfaillie

'What I value most about my work is the fieldwork: being outdoors and directly engaging with nature.'

Kaat recently joined Witteveen+Bos in the ecology group. After studying biology at the Leuven University and having an inspiring thesis experience at the company. Starting her career here was a natural choice.

The working atmosphere at Witteveen+Bos is unique. There is a great balance between professionalism and informal moments, and the collaboration between colleagues is very strong. Everyone helps each other when needed, which benefits not only the work itself but also the team spirit. Additionally, there is plenty of communication between different departments, and I am looking forward to working further on that.

My workday often starts early, especially when fieldwork is planned. I conduct water measurements and frequently go into the field with local managers. This variety, combined with office work where I analyse data and compile reports, makes my job incredibly diverse. At the office, there is always time for discussions with colleagues as well.

During my thesis at Witteveen+Bos, I did research on macroinvertebrates in Flemish ponds and project areas. I immediately felt part of the team thanks to the guidance I received. This experience provided a smooth transition from being a student to becoming a working professional. Now, I have the opportunity to expand my knowledge and explore my interests further within a team with extensive expertise. Being able to continue developing my passion for fieldwork here is a true gift.
