The Westergouwe project comprises the development of a new residential area west of Gouda and north of Moordrecht. The location is 6.5 metres below sea level, making it one of the lowest-lying areas in the Netherlands. The project involves the construction of approximately 3,800 houses and the development of a new nature reserve with water features.
Safe living environment
The new residential area around Gouda and Moordrecht was developed at a location several metres below sea level. The location is therefore prone to flooding. The increasing risk of flooding in connection with climate change has been worked out in a risk analysis. To guarantee a safe living environment, climate adaptation strategies were integrated throughout the project.
Witteveen+Bos carried out contract management and planning design services in the project. In addition, advice on environmental aspects was given and a risk analysis was carried out.
