Water scan: Ghys BV
Ghys BV is a laundry and dry cleaning service with locations in Temse and Sint-Niklaas (operating under the name "OK-shop") that caters to both individuals and businesses, including the hospitality industry. This family-owned business provides its customers with a comprehensive package by offering not only linen and textile cleaning but also an ironing service and pickup service. Ghys BV strives to make a positive environmental impact by conserving energy and water. To achieve this, they are continuously seeking innovations in the market and regularly participate in training programs.
Witteveen+Bos was given the opportunity to conduct a water scan at the company in Temse, where Ghys BV's commitment to sustainability was immediately evident. The company utilizes a modern dry-cleaning machine and maximizes the use of collected rainwater. Nevertheless, our experts were able to suggest several actions to achieve further water savings. After completing the water scan, Ghys BV implemented several savings measures:
- previously undetected leak loss was identified and resolved;
- a 1000 L water recovery tank was installed to collect rinse water from the washing machines and reuse it in the washing process;
- the largest washing machine was replaced with the latest model in the range, which is much more efficient.
Effects of the water scan
The actions taken by Ghys BV have certainly had their effect. By detecting water leaks and installing a recovery system for rinse water, it is expected that around 181 m³ of tap water can be saved annually. Since the company's total water consumption (including rainwater) amounted to 1,739 m³ per year (in 2022), Ghys BV achieved a water saving of about 10%. The water savings from renewing the washing machine were not estimated during the water scan but are expected to result in a significant additional saving.
