Urban development vision and preliminary design for Duivendrecht station
Witteveen+Bos is working on the transformation of Duivendrecht railway station in anticipation of a significant increase in the number of commuters. Commissioned by the Amsterdam Transport Region, we have developed the urban development vision and preliminary design for the public space at Duivendrecht station.
The need for housing versus the pressure on space is creating a complex puzzle in the Randstad. To meet demand, the Bijlmer and the area between Bijlmer ArenA station and Amsterdam Amstel station have been designated as growth centres.
Asset for mobility
From 2028, the first homes in De Nieuwe Kern, a green urban district with a maximum of 6,200 homes, will be completed near Duivendrecht station. Lower parking standards are being applied in the development of these new residential areas. This means less space for cars and more for homes and living space.
The NS stations are an important asset for mobility in these large-scale area developments. The new residents of Amsterdam must be able to commute to work smoothly. The ambition is to transform the station into an extroverted, attractive and well-organised public transport hub. This requires a clear and easily accessible entrance, a high-quality public space and logical routing for all users.
Priority for pedestrians and cyclists
The challenge is to optimise traffic flow and the user experience, so that travellers from the surrounding area can easily find their way to public transport. The design focuses on creating a high-quality environment at ground level, with spacious, green station squares and various places to sit in the shade or sun, so that the station offers an attractive and clear entrance from all directions.
Pedestrians and cyclists (walkers and cyclists) are given priority according to the STOMP principle, with direct and safe routes to the entrance and bicycle parking facilities. Car traffic is limited to functional Kiss & Ride areas on the edges of the area.
Biodiversity incentive
Strategically placed trees, green sightlines and clear landmarks make the station a green oasis and a pleasant transfer point in an urbanised environment. By robustly connecting the currently separate green wedges, eco-passages are created that provide living space for many animal species. This combination creates an attractive entrance at ground level, facilitates many ´walkers and cyclists´ in ´De Nieuwe Kern´ and stimulates biodiversity.
