Urban development study for the municipality of Putten

Commissioned by the municipality of Putten, Witteveen+Bos conducted an urban development study into the infill and transformation of a number of plots on Achterstraat. The current situation with car parks does little justice to the centre of Putten.

We explored, participated and calculated how different urban development models could boost the centre and housing construction in Putten. The location near amenities and in the centre is suitable for housing both the elderly and first-time buyers.

One of the models concerns the ‘garden alley’. In this variant, private gardens are added to the alley in the space between the old stable and the new building, creating a lively transition between the street and the building.

Parking out of sight

The alley is flanked by adjacent maisonettes. Behind the maisonettes, parking is provided under a green parking deck with a communal garden.

This design demonstrates that densification and greening are not mutually exclusive, but can actually reinforce each other and thus contribute to a high-quality living environment.
