What makes Schiedam unique?

Defining urban characteristics on behalf of the Municipality of Schiedam

Together with the designers from the municipality of Schiedam, Witteveen+Bos conducted both a neighbourhood analysis and a supra-neighbourhood analysis of the city. This study is a follow-up to the analysis and main design of the urban development plan and forms the preconditions for future area developments in Schiedam.

What makes Schiedam Schiedam? Together with the municipal designers, we mapped and defined the urban characteristics. In this multi-layered analysis, we looked at aspects such as green spaces (parks), traffic, landscape character (dyke structures), the history of the area and the neighbourhoods (culture, history), etc.

Insight into unique character

Schiedam was analysed on two scales. Each neighbourhood in the city was examined individually. In addition to the neighbourhood analysis, the supra-neighbourhood structures were also mapped out, such as the logistics arteries and nature.

This dual analysis of the entire city has revealed important insights into which structures in the different parts of the city are characteristic of the larger whole. Identifying and recording the long structures in Schiedam makes the city's unique character clear and tangible.

Opportunities and bottlenecks

Based on these characteristics, a treasure map was created showing the unique and cherished characteristics of the municipality of Schiedam. An action list with opportunities and bottlenecks was also compiled for each neighbourhood in the municipality.

The conclusions and concrete translation create preconditions for future area development in Schiedam. Which structures should be preserved or strengthened? It helps the municipality to make the right choices for the careful use of increasingly scarce space.

Applied in Nieuwland

The results of this study have now been applied at neighbourhood level. For the Nieuwland neighbourhood, Witteveen+Bos has drawn up a spatial development framework as the basis for a densification project aimed at creating more homes combined with a mobility transition to a ten-minute neighbourhood.
