Dordrecht traffic bridge to reach centenary following renovation
In 2021, when Witteveen+Bos began work for Rijkswaterstaat on the planning phase of the renovation of the Dordrecht traffic bridge, it was one of the first ever replacement and renovation projects. This double bascule bridge, built in 1939, is being extensively renovated to extend its lifespan by a minimum of 30 years, allowing it reach 100 years of age.
The Dordrecht traffic bridge was initially part of Rijksweg 16 (i.e. the A16 highway) and connects Dordrecht and Zwijndrecht over the busy Oude Maas river. It consists of a double bascule bridge, a truss bridge, and several approach spans. Following the construction of the Drecht Tunnel in 1977, the bridge is no longer part of the A16. While many steel highway bridges are currently in a poor state due to the increase in traffic since their construction, the Drecht Tunnel has ensured that the Dordrecht traffic bridge remains in reasonably good condition.
Despite this, extensive inspections of the bridge and recalculations have revealed that major renovations are necessary, with many of the bridge’s components requiring repair or replacement. The steel of the truss bridge is being retreated to reduce the speed at which rust forms. The steel structure of the bridge deck is also being repaired, and the concrete road surface is being replaced. All installations and controls are being replaced too, both in and on the bridge. The approach spans are also in need of renovation.
Then and now

Industrial heritage
The Dordrecht traffic bridge is an old bridge and part of the country’s industrial heritage, which is reflected in its appearance. For this reason, the renovation will not only involve a technical and structural upgrade. To add extra emphasis to the bridge’s authenticity and enhance its heritage status, the original design’s colour and materials will be used during the renovation. In other words, not only are the mechanics and functioning of the bridge being renovated; its exterior is also being enhanced.
