Museum Kruithuis wins Heritage Sustainability Award 2025

Sustainable future for built heritage: from energy label E to A++

Museum Kruithuis wins Heritage Sustainability Award 2025

The Kruithuis in ‘s-Hertogenbosch is the last remaining powder magazine in the Netherlands from the Eighty Years’ War (1568-1648). The hexagonal shape and combination of brick and natural stone are characteristic features of this national monument. Under the leadership of Witteveen+Bos, this historical heritage site has been transformed into a future-proof museum.

The seventeenth-century building has been upgraded from energy label E to A++. It was recently awarded the Heritage Sustainability Award 2025. This award is presented annually to a project that is an inspiring example of sustainable management of built heritage.

A professional jury selected five projects from 29 entries. In the end, the public gave the most votes (5,600) to Museum Kruithuis. The award was presented during the Sustainable Heritage Congress. Witteveen+Bos was the lead contractor and carried out this wonderful project on behalf of the municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch, together with BiermanHenket as a subcontractor.

Restoration and sustainability

Thanks to smart solutions and reuse, the building has been transformed into a future-proof museum. Some highlights of the project:

  • innovative combination of respectful restoration and impactful sustainability;
  • utilisation of historical finds and constructive insights during the process;
  • fully accessible for disabled people, including a new lift;
  • insulation measures to energy label A++ level while retaining historic windows and walls (up to one metre thick);
  • invisible integration of installations for ventilation, underfloor heating and cooling;
  • new access bridge, a rare construction in buildings;
  • gunmaker's cottage with monumental value saved from demolition and incorporated into the design.

The sustainable restoration and transformation is part of the repurposing of the Kruithuis into a new fortress and water museum. In the spring of 2024, Kring Vrienden 's-Hertogenbosch opened the new Museum Kruithuis, a new tourist attraction for the city.
