Leuven Green Plan: building a resilient and sustainable city
The Leuven Green Plan is a roadmap for a city powered by nature. Commissioned by the City of Leuven, Felixx and Witteveen+Bos developed an ambitious strategy to make the city greener, healthier, and more sustainable. This strategic vision document outlines actionable steps to strengthen urban biodiversity and better prepare Leuven for the impacts of climate change.
Ecology at the core
The Green Plan emphasizes the essential role of nature in all urban projects. Green spaces are not just for enjoyment—they offer practical solutions to key challenges. From effective rainwater management to improving air quality and protecting biodiversity, the plan provides nature-based solutions that ensure Leuven remains a healthy and livable city.
Collaborative development for lasting impact
The Green Plan was developed through a participatory process involving city staff and external experts from various sectors. Together, they envisioned ways to enhance Leuven’s landscape. Six flagship projects, along with smaller neighborhood initiatives, were explored. Notable examples include the redesign of the Dijle Valley and the integration of nature-based solutions into street design.
Shaping the future of urban development
The Green Plan serves as a blueprint for balancing ecology and urban growth. It forms the foundation for a new Spatial Policy Plan aligned with Leuven’s and Europe’s climate goals. By integrating ecological principles, the plan lays the groundwork for a resilient and nature-driven city.
