Lessons from Noorderpark for nature restoration in the Netherlands

How can you make vulnerable nature future-proof in an area where recreation, agriculture, construction and drinking water extraction converge?

Tauw and Witteveen+Bos have drawn up a knowledge document for the Province of Utrecht on the functioning of Noorderpark – part of the Natura 2000 area Oostelijke Vechtplassen – and outlines directions for restoring its ecological quality.

This knowledge document is also applicable in other areas where nature conservation goals are under pressure from nitrogen, climate change and water challenges. It shows the avenues:

  • Which measures are promising for the restoration of species-rich nature types, such as strengthening clean seepage water and smart water level management
  • How to translate complex ecohydrological knowledge into a perspective for action
  • Where opportunities lie for collaboration between authorities, water managers and regional partners

This knowledge document is intended for anyone working to achieve a balance between nature, water and functional uses. It can be downloaded here (only in Dutch):
