Port of Rotterdam Authority
From diesel-powered to zero-emission energy supply
Port of Rotterdam Authority
The Port of Rotterdam Authority has made its docking facilities sustainable, so that vessels can safely load and unload cargo without using diesel generators. The old systems for lighting, capstans and data communication were powered by fossil fuels, and were also high-maintenance and susceptible to malfunctions. We have replaced them with systems powered by solar panels and batteries.
Sustainable off-grid energy supply
Witteveen+Bos designed an autonomous energy system that is fully powered by renewable energy, without a connection to the electrical grid. We studied the optimal combination of solar panels, battery storage and backup power supplies, with an emphasis on operational continuity and safety.
Reliability and safety as a precondition
We produced the design and also carried out a risk assessment and verified that the systems comply with maritime safety standards. This means the Port of Rotterdam Authority now has a reliable, safe and low-maintenance concept that can easily be scaled up for use in other locations.
