Grid reinforcement around Brussels

Anticipating growing demand

Grid reinforcement around Brussels

The demand for electricity in the Brussels region is increasing due to the growth in electric mobility, the use of heat pumps and the electrification of industry.

In response, the grid operator Elia has developed a package of measures to partially replace and reinforce the electrical infrastructure in the area. This includes works at the Kobbegem high-voltage substation. The works to increase the capacity of the substation include the design of an additional 150 kV spur, which is linked to a new 50 MVA transformer.

Above and below ground

Witteveen+Bos has been contracted by Elia as a long-term study partner to help them tackle the challenges of the energy transition. The work done by Witteveen+Bos includes producing design drawings for the required works.

The design includes detailed field plans with all required components, steel structures and connections. It also covers the underground situation (cables, earthing, foundations, sewerage) and plans for adaptations in the associated building (control room).

The contractor can use the design to carry out the necessary works. The works for Kobbegem began in late 2025 and should be completed by the end of 2027. The installation of extra 150 kV conductors at the spur to the high-voltage substation will take place in mid-2026.
