Electrical power capacity for new H.Essers terminal
Electrical power capacity for new H.Essers terminal
In 2026, the logistics services provider H.Essers will open a new terminal in the port of Bergen op Zoom. Unfortunately, the connection capacity required for the terminal is not available from the existing electrical grid. The challenge: how can we ensure that the terminal can open on time and be fully electrically powered?
From capacity analysis to specific scenario
To resolve this problem, Witteveen+Bos carried out an extensive capacity analysis. This involved detailed calculations of the expected energy consumption and required connection capacity. Alternative solution pathways were then studied. These included flexible solutions, such as a group and block power contract with the grid operator, and local battery storage and behind-the-meter solutions.
Clarity, choice and certainty
We developed various scenarios, each with a cost estimation and an analysis of the feasibility and the impact on nitrogen emissions. This gave the client the confidence to choose a solution that is both technically feasible and future-proof.
Result
Through this approach, H.Essers gained a clear course for action: a specific pathway towards achieving an operational terminal despite the current limitations imposed by the grid, and a firm foundation for further electrification in the future.
