Detailed engineering design for water management in Kosambi

Since 1987 Witteveen+Bos has been involved in land reclamation for Pantai Indah Kapuk, Kapuk Naga Indah and Tangerang International City. The city of Jakarta has grown beyond the capacity of its current boundaries and is looking to expand northward into the Sea of Java. To facilitate this, our experts have designed a development plan for an area of 12,000 hectares. Polders will comprise a significant part of this area.

Work is currently being extended westward in the direction of Kosambi. An onshore development of approximately 1,000 hectare is located here, in an area in Tangerang consisting of low-lying rice fields and fish ponds. Our experts have been involved in water management on this project, creating an integrated and adaptive design together with our client and the master planner.

The northern part of the area will be developed into a polder in a way similar to the Pantai Indah Kapuk project. The Sungai Tahang River, which is quite large, flows through the reclaimed zone, effectively splitting the area into two polders. The water management system we designed therefore includes 1-3 pumping stations per area. The detailed engineering design for the water management system features canals (including culverts) and overflow drains, with primary, secondary and tertiary drains supporting each other. To increase effectiveness, drains are also located outside the reclaimed area.

The southeastern part will be developed by landfilling. It will be created using a gravity system and be located below sea level. As the development area lies between a river and the sea, constant monitoring over the coming years will be necessary to assess whether the dyke needs reinforcing as water levels rise.
