At the invitation of King Willem-Alexander, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said of Oman paid a state visit to the Netherlands this week. This year marks 400 years of maritime ties between the Netherlands and Oman. Our managing director, Wouter Bijman, represented Witteveen+Bos during the state visit’s economic programme.

The visit aimed to promote economic cooperation between the countries, with an emphasis on renewable energy. Focus lay on topics including port development, green hydrogen production and exportation, and water.

Masirah Energy Gateway

During a CEO round table, Wouter gave a pitch on the Masirah Energy Gateway. On this project, in collaboration with Van Oord, a 20-kilometre-long energy bridge is being built between the island of Masirah and mainland Oman.

Employing a combination of tidal, wind and solar power, the energy bridge will generate 2200 gigawatt hours of sustainable energy annually. This first-of-its-kind megaproject fits in seamlessly with Oman’s sustainability vision for 2040. The power it generates can also be used as an energy source for producing green hydrogen.

The afternoon featured meetings with King Willem-Alexander, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, and other political figures from Oman.

Topic table on water

During a topic table on water, together with Deltares, Royal HaskoningDHV and others, we shared our experiences and activities in Oman on drinking water availability and the collection and treatment of wastewater. Together with local partners, we are contributing to efforts in these areas with high-quality knowledge and an integrated project approach.

Our special thanks go to the Kingdom of the Netherlands’ embassy in Oman, the Netherlands Water Partnership, and VNO-NCW for making our participation possible.
