Witteveen+Bos and the department of Water Management at Delft University of Technology have committed to enhancing their collaboration in the field of drinking water. Through a three-year strategic agreement, the two organisations will combine scientific insights with practical experience to accelerate the development of innovative, broadly applicable solutions for the drinking water sector.

The sector faces various challenges, from the threat of water shortages due to long periods of drought to harnessing alternative sources (seawater and surface water) and dealing with contaminants of emerging concern. These challenges have increased the need for knowledge in areas including concentrate treatment and effective methods of removing organic micropollutants such as pesticides and PFAS.

Interaction between fundamental research and practical applications

By combining fundamental research with applied engineering, Witteveen+Bos and Delft University of Technology aim to test, build a case for and deploy new technologies faster. ‘Witteveen+Bos can transform fundamental insights from Delft University of Technology into pilot projects and practical applications, and the university can help to deepen and provide a theoretical basis for ongoing research’, says Jochem Schut, drinking water PMC leader at Witteveen+Bos

Greater impact

‘By strengthening our ties with Delft University of Technology, we can also keep up with the latest technological developments. In this way, we can provide a more comprehensive picture in our recommendations on system choices, and our collaboration will also increase our impact on the sector.’
The new collaboration is the latest step in a long-term relationship. Many Witteveen+Bos employees studied at Delft University of Technology, and the two organisations already collaborate through internships, graduation projects, guest lectures and research programmes.
