The municipality of Amsterdam wants to guarantee the future management and maintenance of the integral road tunnel system and has therefore started the Amsterdam Road Tunnels Action Programme. This programme will tackle three tunnels and the traffic control centre. The municipality has asked Tunnel Engineering Consultants (TEC, a permanent partnership between Royal HaskoningDHV and Witteveen+Bos), assisted by Covalent ITS BV, to support this programme in the coming years.

The Municipality of Amsterdam’s Metro and Tram service has awarded the contract on the basis of a tender with the best price-quality ratio and, according to the assessors, TEC positively distinguished itself from the other tenderers. On Wednesday, 3 April 2019, the cooperation agreement for the technical advisory services for the Amsterdam Road Tunnels Action Programme was signed by Theo van Bekkum, General Manager of Metro and Tram, Wouter Bijman, Infrastructure and Mobility Business line manager at Witteveen+Bos, and Anton van der Sanden, Director Transport & Planning at Royal HaskoningDHV.

TEC will support and advise the municipality within the programme on:

• the renovation of the Piet Hein tunnel
• improving the technical installations in the Amsterdam Arena tunnel
• improving fire resistance in the Michiel de Ruijter tunnel
• modernisation of the Traffic Control Centre Amsterdam.

The work involves various disciplines such as tunnel safety, fire safety, installations and, of course, the operation, control and monitoring systems (3B). This work will be carried out during the design, implementation and commissioning phases. The total contract extends over a period of approximately four years. This will contribute on the one hand to tunnel safety and availability, and on the other hand to a uniform future-oriented road tunnel system and traffic control centre.

Following the recently awarded cooperation agreement with Rijkswaterstaat (Directorate-General of Public Works and Water Management) for the renovation of the first Heinenoord tunnel, TEC has once again acquired a major renovation contract in the Netherlands. TEC will work with partner Covalent ITS BV on both projects in the area of industrial automation.
