International Day of Women & Girls in Science
Wednesday 11 February is International Day of Women & Girls in Science. A day on which we draw extra attention to the position of women in the technical sector. Attention that is not self-evident, but necessary. Leonie Koops, director of the Infrastructure & Mobility sector, agrees. We interviewed her about the significance of this day for girls and women who want to work in technology.
Passion for technology
Leonie talks about her passion for technology and her experiences as a woman in a civil engineering environment that has traditionally been dominated by men. At least in the Netherlands, because in other cultures, civil engineering does not seem to be such a typically male-dominated field.
A great job that contributes to a better world
She also encourages young girls to follow their scientific hearts and use their knowledge and talent to contribute to a better living environment and to the challenges we face in the Netherlands and worldwide. Leonie is convinced that women can play a role in this: ‘If you are a woman with the intrinsic motivation to work in engineering, you can create a wonderful job for yourself in which you can make an important contribution to making the world a better and more beautiful place.’
