International nomination for bio-based bicycle bridge Ritsumasyl

The bio-based bicycle bridge in the Frisian town of Ritsumasyl has been nominated for The Footbridge 2022 Awards in the category Movable Bridges.

The swing bridge in Ritsumasyl is made entirely of bio-based composite and has a total length of 66 metres, with a free span of 22 metres. It consists of a combination of balsa wood, flax, resin and hardener, which consists of 85% natural material and will last at least 50 years.

Commissioned by the Province of Fryslân, the design was elaborated by construction team D.R.I.V.E., consisting of Sweco/Witteveen+Bos, the Province of Fryslân, contractor Strukton Civiel Noord-Oost, Spie and composite manufacturer Delft Infra Composites.

The Footbridge 2022 Awards are an initiative of Bridge Design & Engineering magazine and are granted once every 3 years. The winners will be announced on September 7 during the international Footbridge 2022 conference, held from 7 - 9 September in Madrid, Spain. The Frisian bridge competes in the category against a bridge from Denmark, South Africa and another bridge from the Netherlands.
