Inspection of Ventspils’ movable bridge

Ventspils may be a small village on Latvia’s east coast, but it is the location of one of Latvia’s three main ports, the Port of Ventspils. The village is also home to the country’s only movable bridge. The bridge spans over the Venta River and was redesigned by Witteveen+Bos in 2009.

After nearly 15 years, the bridge is in need of electrical and mechanical engineering maintenance. Ventspils Freeport Authority, which owns the bridge, has asked W+B to estimate the extent and cost of this maintenance. The bridge is an important link in the local infrastructure, so it is important to ensure its availability and safety. To this end, inspections were conducted in mid-October 2023 by Witteveen+Bos colleagues from the Netherlands and Latvia, in collaboration with local contractors. These included a NEN-2767 inspection and a risk assessment for the electrical and mechanical systems. To avoid inconveniencing traffic, the inspections were conducted at night, under the watchful eye of our colleagues. It was thus determined what needs to be done to ensure the bridge can be used safely for another 15 years.
