Engineering consortia to tackle the Meuse for Limburg water authority

On 4 November, the engineering consortia Arcadis and Witteveen+Bos, WSP and Kragten, and Royal HaskoningDHV and Fugro signed the framework contract for engineering services for the Limburg water authority's Flood Protection Programme. The contract will run for a maximum of six years and will provide the water authority with sufficient expertise and capacity to improve flood protection on the river Meuse.

Last summer's floods along the Meuse demonstrated the need for further reinforcement. The three consortia will be responsible for the designs, studies and procedures up to and including delivery and handover to the manager.

Under the motto 'Our Meuse, Our Safety', the Limburg water authority is committed to building strong dykes throughout the province of Limburg. Our focus is on the future, and we are implementing 16 dyke reinforcement projects to ensure that Limburg is well protected against flooding. Last summer's floods in the river valleys and along the Meuse highlighted this urgency more than ever.

Delta Programme

By engaging the three engineering consortia, the water authority seeks to enhance area and/or spatial qualities, while at the same time combining a meticulous working process with the rapid provision of water safety. At ten sites the assignment concerns dyke reinforcement only, while the remaining six require a combination of measures. At five of these sites, the water authority is investigating the possibility of relocating the dykes as part of the national Delta Programme on flooding.

This is, of course, a very challenging task. Climate change is having, and will continue to have, a major impact on us all, so it is wise to be prepared. All of the parties involved have a wealth of experience. Witteveen+Bos has been providing its services in conjunction with Arcadis for the past five years. We are delighted to be able to continue this collaboration and to contribute our knowledge and expertise to this programme. We look forward to working together to achieve the best possible result for the Limburg water authority.
