Cycling hill in Groningen
In the spring of 2024, Witteveen+Bos began a study for the Provincial Authority of Groningen to investigate the feasibility of creating a cycling mountain on former landfill sites in the province. Like the VAM Mountain, but in Groningen. Old landfill sites in Veendam and Usquert had already been selected in the preliminary process as the most promising locations. Witteveen+Bos is now working out the details of the variants for this project.
In the feasibility study, Witteveen+Bos is investigating the most promising alternatives for cycling facilities at both sites. This work is based on design-oriented study and brainstorming sessions with the stakeholders. For example, it transpired that the ‘mountains’ needed to add value to the current recreational network and be widely accessible.
The Provincial Authority of Groningen is looking for ways to turn this unused space into enjoyable and inclusive recreation sites. The authority would like its own version of the 48-metre-high VAM Mountain, although it will be somewhat lower due to the heights of 23 and 25 metres at the two selected sites.
Witteveen+Bos is developing three variants for each site: a sports-oriented variant, a family-friendly variant and a peaceful haven/place-of-reflection variant. Sketches created for the sports variant include additional challenging routes and features for cyclists, as well as, for example, a pump track for BMX and stunt scooter riders, and public fitness equipment. The family variant includes an ‘experience mountain’, with far-reaching views out over the landscape as a prominent feature. This mountain additionally offers a theatre meadow, playground equipment and a hospitality location. The place-of-reflection variant offers facilities for cyclists and hikers, as well as breathtaking views, a bird watching hide, an outdoor theatre and possibly even a wellness complex.
Witteveen+Bos will specify the costs and effects (technical, level of local community support, environmental) of the alternatives at both locations and come up with a proposal for a preferred variant. Based on this information, the Provincial Authority, in consultation with Usquert and Veendam, will decide whether and how to proceed with the plans. At the next stage, the Provincial Authority will work out the designs in detail and initiate the permit process.
