Arcadis and Witteveen+Bos prepare contracts for the A4 Haaglanden-N14 project
Rijkswaterstaat has commissioned consultancy and engineering firms Arcadis and Witteveen+Bos to prepare the widening of the A4 Haaglanden-N14 highway over the next four years. It concerns the section of motorway from the N14 to roughly the Kethel tunnel near Rotterdam, one of the main access roads to Rijswijk and The Hague.
This large-scale and extensive project includes the transformation of junctions on the N14 to multi-level junctions, the widening of the A4, increased capacity for slip roads and exits and the replacement of civil engineering structures. For example, the railway bridge that crosses the A4 near Rijswijk has to be replaced, and the junction between the A4 and RandstadRail will be upgraded. Arcadis and Witteveen+Bos are responsible for organising soil surveys and a range of other studies concerning ecology, cables and pipes, among other things. The engineering firms will also be drawing up the works contracts and assisting Rijkswaterstaat with the tender process for construction companies.
Arcadis divisional director Harrie Kuijper: ‘We’re very proud to have been awarded this project. We will work hand in hand with the people at Witteveen+Bos to make sure that future users will be able to continue their journeys smoothly. Infrastructure projects like this one are extremely dynamic. Take the railway bridge over the A4, for example, where we’ll also have to consider the requirements of the rail operator, ProRail. And of course, we also have to take into account the wishes of all the other stakeholders. So we’re really looking forward to getting started!’
Wouter Bijman, head of Infrastructure and Mobility at Witteveen+Bos: ‘We’re delighted to be joining forces with Arcadis to deliver such a technically challenging project with high social value. We’ll do this as sustainably as possible, respecting the wishes of the local community. This project ties in perfectly with our mission to apply our world-class expertise to solve complex challenges facing society and to be a committed partner to our clients.’
