April 14: Girls' Day!
April 14: Girls’ Day!
Learn about the world of civil engineering
Today is Girls’ Day, a national initiative organised annually on 14 April by VHTO, the expertise agency that promotes the participation of girls in science, technology and ICT. We are also taking part in Girls’ Day. At four different Witteveen+Bos offices (Deventer, Amsterdam, Heerenveen and Breda), girls aged from 10 to 15 can learn more about the world of civil engineering.
Building bridges with satay skewers and liquorice
In Breda, pupils will learn about (the future of) bridges and tunnels, from design to demolition and renovation. There will also be a Bridges Challenge.
In Heerenveen, pupils from Linde College in Wolvega will take part in two interactive workshops: a water purification experiment, in which the girls will investigate how you can purify water, and a construction project, in which they will design and build a bridge in teams.
In Deventer, the participants will be divided into two groups of seven girls. One group will complete an assignment about measuring vibration and tension. The other group will produce an integrated design. We will round off the programme with a competition to build a bridge with satay skewers and liquorice.
At our Amsterdam office, we will start the day with a short presentation about our company and about dykes. We will then play Dyke Dynamics, an interactive game that challenges participants to build a sustainable dyke that will last 150 years. In Amsterdam, we will bring Girls’ Day to a close with a speed dating session with several female role models.
