The ‘Trias’ design principle involves limiting and optimising the consumption – and thus the depletion – of energy and raw materials. This also reduces costs during the design’s operational lifespan.

The ‘Trias’ design principle strives for a minimal use of finite sources. It is a three-step strategy to creating an energy-efficient and raw material-efficient design, which makes it also a strategy for reducing carbon emissions. The principle follows the three Trias Energetica steps:

  • reduce demand: limit demand and avoid unnecessary use or waste
  • use infinite sources of energy and waste for raw materials
  • use finite sources that you need to meet the remaining requirements efficiently
