Stappegoor bicycle underpass

The municipality of Tilburg wanted a bicycle underpass to create a safe and pleasant junction with the Ringbaan-Zuid. Stappegoor is a well-known sports and school area visited daily by thousands of young people, while the junction with the Ringbaan-Zuid and the Trouwlaan has been notorious for years as one of the most dangerous in Tilburg, especially for cyclists. Commissioned by the municipality of Tilburg, Witteveen+Bos created an integrated design for the bicycle underpass in Tilburg, involving landscape architects, traffic experts and constructors.

The intersection is constructed at a different level to create a comfortable, long-distance cycle route avoiding the inconvenience of intersecting traffic. Important starting points in the design are the preservation of the characteristic tree-lined avenues, creating a socially safe and comfortable bicycle underpass, and a future-proof layout. The existing green structure has been used fully, and the application of green embankments and a varied pattern of different types of trees will give cyclists on the north side a sense of cycling through a park. This ensures a pleasant route experience for cyclists.

Witteveen+Bos provided the (spatial) integration and design for the municipality through a landscape plan and a subsequent Aesthetic Plan of Requirements (EPvE). The result is a supported spatial design solution, backed up by spatial criteria for the tender in a Design & Construct contract, where the spatial quality of the development is guaranteed.
