Renovation of canals in North Brabant: towards emission-free construction despite grid congestion

Rijkwaterstaat has an extensive programme of works to renovate canals in the province of North Brabant, including the replacement of various culverts. RWS aims to maximise the use of electric construction equipment and limit carbon emissions during the construction works. Because the project area is affected by grid congestion, it is crucial to know whether this is technically feasible without delays or interruptions.

Mapping the required capacity

For each phase of the project implementation, Witteveen+Bos identified the required capacity and energy consumption of the construction works in detail. Based on this information, we studied alternatives to diesel-powered equipment, including temporary grid connections, battery containers and hybrid solutions.

Practical and scalable concepts

We proposed solutions including a mobile battery with location-specific dimensions and gave advice on reducing simultaneous power consumption by different equipment types.

These solutions are adapted to the location, project phasing and logistics. In this way, they provide Rijkswaterstaat with the tools they need to implement a phased and controlled transition to emission-free equipment, even in situations where the electrical grid imposes restrictions.

Result

Thanks to this approach, RWS can complete the renovation works with significantly lower carbon and nitrogen emissions without affecting the timetable. This is an important step towards future-proof and emission-free infrastructure projects.
