Remediation of evaporation ponds at Tengiz
Since a few decades Tengizchevroil (TCO) utilises evaporation ponds for discharge of industrial and sanitary wastewater coming from oil production operations in Tengiz. TCO wants to decommission the evaporation ponds, which are no longer needed in current and future operations because the construction of a new Wastewater Treatment Facility (WTF) is completed. This is an opportunity for TCO to implement a reclamation approach of these areas which complies with Republic of Kazakhstan requirements and public expectations, but also maximises reuse of material, land and resources. The different ponds range in size from approximately ten to seventy hectares.
Remediation alternatives and reclamation options
TCO has commissioned Witteveen+Bos Kazakhstan to assess the current environmental and physical quality of the sediment, soil and groundwater in and around the evaporation ponds. Based on the site and risk assessment, different remediation alternatives and reclamation options have been developed and the preferred alternative is elaborated into a remediation action plan including permits. The first two ponds have been successfully remediated in 2014 and 2015 under supervision of Witteveen+Bos. Several ponds are expected to be decommissioned and remediated in the coming years.
