Development of Additive Manufacturing Technology for Construction

Singapore has become an exemplary metropolitan city for Asia and the rest of the world. Due to a sustained expansion in population growth and increasing expectations from its citizens in terms of liveability and health, there is a need for an even higher quality and affordable public housing over the next few decades. For this reason the Housing and Development Board is seeking to automate and digitise the construction industry in order to improve the building construction productivity.

A three year research project to explore the potential adoption of 3D Concrete Printing for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. The research collaboration will look into developing digital fabrication technologies through the establishment of a 3D Concrete Printing Facility in Singapore.

With this project the possibilities and potential benefits of 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) technology for precast elements production are explored, to push for higher construction productivity in Singapore. The aim of the project is to reduce dependency on foreign labour and improve overall construction productivity with a high level of automation. 

Witteveen+Bos, Robin Village and the Nanyang Technological University will develop the 3D Concrete Printing System (3DCPS) for the Housing and Development Board (HDB) in Singapore and perform R&D for customized solutions for Singapore. 

The 3D Concrete Printing project objectives aims to offer more flexibility and design options for HDB future developments, and expand the capabilities in the construction industry. In addition, it will raise construction productivity, and reduce the dependency on conventional precast fabrication workers, thus addressing potential labour shortages.
