Plan of approach for Trinidad flood control

Corporación Andina de Fomento (CAF, Development Bank of Latin America) has selected Witteveen+Bos, alongside local partners Trintoplan and Ecoengineering, to prepare the final design for Trinidadian flood mitigation measures.

The island of Trinidad experiences severe flooding during heavy rainfall. Rainfall in Trinidad and Tobago in October 2018 caused extensive flooding and damage, with some 80 per cent of the country inundated. Witteveen+Bos was involved in the 2019 quick scan for the restoration and improvement of the island’s drainage system. To implement the proposed improvements, the Ministry of Works and Transport decided to draw up a plan to improve the drainage system and prevent flooding. Initially Witteveen+Bos will work with local partners to draw up a strategic plan for the various catchment areas.

The flooding issue is not being approached as a strictly technical challenge: stakeholder involvement and an integral approach to the sectors involved are important elements in our approach. A set of short and medium-term measures is selected for each river basin in the strategic plan. In a second step, we will produce a definitive design for the selected measures, after which tender documents will be prepared.
