Innovation Award for 1-STEP® filter

On 17 January the 1-STEP® filter won the Innovation Award in the 'Municipal Water' category at the International Water Summit 2018 in Abu Dhabi. The 1-STEP® filter is for the post-treatment of effluent from wastewater treatment plants. In a compact installation, the filter simultaneously and extensively reduces the content of suspended matter, phosphate, nitrogen, metals, organic micropollutants and medicine residues.

The 1-STEP® filter is the result of a collaboration between Witteveen+Bos, Nijhuis Industries, Cabot Norit Activated Carbon, Waternet and TU Delft. Cor Merks of Witteveen+Bos received the prize on behalf of the cooperation partners. He noticed a great interest in innovation during the International Water Summit: 'There is a lot of information about pilot plant research to determine whether the filter also works with the waste water composition at the customer’s location. The Innovation Award will be very useful in the Gulf region because an international, local jury has assessed the 1-STEP® filter as an appealing and implementable innovation.'

In order to meet the stricter requirements and taking into account the social resistance to organic micro pollutants and medicine residues in water, many Water Authorities are making plans for a cost-effective quality improvement of effluent. The construction of a 1-STEP® filter, which has been operating successfully at Waternet for many years, is a quick and easy to implement solution. Witteveen+Bos, Nijhuis Industries and Cabot Norit Activated are working together on a successful implementation worldwide.
