Honourable mention from Schreuders Award judges

On 3 November 2017 the Zutphen Underpasses project received an honourable mention during the award ceremony for the 2017 Schreuders Award at the COB conference. The new underpasses in the town of Zutphen were praised by the judges as being ‘architectural gems’ that offer an ‘exceptional underground experience’.

The two underpasses in question, Marstunnel and Kostverloren, properly interconnect the city centre of Zutphen and the residential and business district called Noorderhaven, which is located to the east of the railway and is still under development. The appearance of both tunnels is striking. They are based on strong architectural ideas, and a lot of attention has been paid to lighting and design. At the request of Zutphen municipal authority and ProRail, the drawings, the contract preparations for realisation, and the construction supervision were carried out by Railinfra Solutions, which at the time was a joint venture of Royal HaskoningDHV and Witteveen+Bos.

The winner of the 2017 Schreuders Award was the A2 Maastricht project. Witteveen+Bos had not only been involved in Zutphen Underpasses, but also in another nominated project: Lammermarkt parking garage in Leiden.
