Our corporate objectives

Global goals

The complex challenges facing society are summarised by the United Nations’ (UN) 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). These 17 goals form the core of the 2030 sustainable development agenda agreed by the UN in 2015 to achieve a socially, ecologically and economically sustainable world.

An analysis among stakeholders showed that we can contribute specifically to 11 of the 17 goals. We formulated four corporate objectives with which we aim to increase our impact on these material goals.

Goal 1: Social value in projects

We are wholeheartedly committed to generating value for society. It therefore comes as no surprise that this is Witteveen+Bos’s first corporate objective. Through the work we perform for our clients, we contribute to developing a future-proof society – whether in the Netherlands, Singapore, or anywhere else in the world where we are involved in a project. We do this, for example, by improving water safety and accessibility, providing drinking water and energy, and contributing to a healthy living environment. We also contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As SDGs focus on developing countries, Witteveen+Bos translated the SDGs into ‘hot topics’ relevant in all our projects. We also developed seven sustainable design principles (SDPs), ensuring maximum contribution to these social goals in each project. These SDPs are part of our Quality System, which is based on the most recent ISO 9001 and SCC standards.

It is important to know in concrete terms how big our impact is, which is why we created the SDG Impact Tool.

Goal 2: Talent development

We want to be the platform where people can fulfill their ambition and develop their talents. We strive to be a good employer by ensuring maximum talent development and diversity within our company.

Our people are our strength and the demand for their expertise is greater than ever. Their knowledge and dedication are what helps us make a difference. We invest in professional and personal development, both in terms of content/specialisation and of the broader view (on society) our professionals possess. We believe that a challenging work environment with a healthy work-life balance leads to additional motivation, job satisfaction and quality of our solutions. This allows our employees to get the best out of themselves.

At Witteveen+Bos, employees are given a lot of personal responsibility and freedom. Our vision on developing talents combines learning ‘the craft’ in practice with learning from and with one another via a wide range of internal (almost 350 courses!) and external educational opportunities, from master classes and hackathons given by top experts in their fields to in-depth courses. This approach allows our employees to continue developing each and every day.

Goal 3: Sustainable business operations

Our third corporate objective is sustainable business operations. We are continuously improving our corporate processes. Energy-neutral premises, climate-neutral mobility and the sustainable procurement of goods and services are important cornerstones. We resolved to make our internal business operations climate-neutral by 2030. That means we will be working hard in the coming years to achieve reductions in carbon emissions. Examples of steps we are taking to achieve this include energy-neutral premises, climate-neutral mobility and the sustainable procurement of goods and services. We are proud that we hold a CO2 Awareness Certificate at level 5 (the highest level) of the CO2 Performance Ladder.

Looking for 'the good'

'Sustainability is in our DNA. Witteveen+Bos has always been convinced of its ability and desire to contribute to a better world. In that respect, every era presents its own particular challenges.'

'To do what you stand for. As entrepreneurs, we want to engage in socially responsible business practices. We take responsibility through our own operations by making our housing and mobility policies more sustainable. Every year, we strive to reduce our environmental impact. We report on this in an integrated manner in our annual report. The CO2 Performance Ladder is an instrument that encourages CO2-conscious behavior and we are proud to be certified at level 5.'

Goal 4: Economic value

Healthy financial results are needed to be able to continue investing in the development of our talents, our premises and the further professionalisation of our company. The changing nature of the challenges facing society – such as those relating to climate – require investment in new markets, services and products. Finally, stable results are important for the health of our participation system. Our participation system enables Witteveen+Bos to partly finance its own growth by issuing shares, in addition to obtaining bank credit. Our PMC structure facilitates continuous alignment of the organization with market needs. By continuously improving our services, we can continue create long-term value for our clients and stakeholders. We therefore aim to realise a healthy annual net profit margin of at least 8 % and an annual workforce and revenue growth of 3 to 5%, both in headcount and in turnover.
