Floriade 2022

In 2022, the Floriade – an international horticultural exhibition – will be held in Almere. Due to cost and sustainability considerations, the decision was made to construct the site in such a way as to lay the foundation for the future, envisioned neighbourhood of Hortus. This means that the infrastructure and buildings will ultimately serve multiple ends.

The principal contractor for the project is the Municipality of Almere. At the end of 2018, a development contract was signed with Amvest and Dura Vermeer Construction and Real Estate, and construction began at the start of 2019. On 1 July 2021, the site will be delivered for set-up of the event. Following the exhibition, which runs for six months, construction of the neighbourhood will take place between 2022 and 2030.

Realisation of urban design plan

Witteveen+Bos is working on the development and planning of the site for Weerwater C.V., the name chosen for the combination of Amvest and Dura Vermeer. We have the lead in realising the urban design plan, right up to the final step of furnishing the public spaces. As well as this, we will provide the civil engineering, offer guidance in attaining the necessary permits and conduct studies on sound, soil quality, geotechnics and ecology. We will also be supporting the project management.

Future-proof city district

The future-proof city district will be a sustainable and innovative residential area, initially comprising 660 residences. Transitioning from event site to neighbourhood must be simple to achieve. The characteristics essential for this include multifunctional designs and innovative and circular building techniques. The project is an excellent opportunity for Witteveen+Bos to develop sustainable solutions. For the 2022 Floriade, we are working on promising concepts that can also be applied elsewhere to assist the transition to sustainable and healthy living environments.
